The Department of Economics offers a course-based Master of Arts program, a course-based Master of Arts program with a specialization in Economics and Finance and a thesis-based PhD program.
Areas of study in Economics include but are not limited to Applied Econometrics, Economic Development, Environmental and Resource Economics, Financial Economics, Industrial Organization, International Economics, Labor Economics, Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics, and Public Economics. The Department does not guarantee that each of these fields will be offered in any given year.

The MA in Economics is a course-based program consisting of at least 27 units in coursework including a 3-unit independent research project.
Program Requirements
Required courses (12 units):
ECON 503 - MA Microeconomic Theory
ECON 581 - MA Macroeconomic Theory
ECON 598 - Econometric Theory and Applications
ECON 599 - Applied Econometrics
Note:
ECON 503 and ECON 581 may be replaced by ECON 603 and ECON 681, with consent of the department.
Elective courses (12 units):
Four 3-unit graduate-level elective Economics courses
Research Project (3 units):
ECON 999 - Directed Research Project (an independent research project)
