Official transcripts from institutions outside of the U.S. are required to be evaluated by amember of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). Applicants arerequired to have an official course-by-course evaluation completed.The course-by-courseevaluation will serve as the official transcript for studies completed outside of the U.S.
Northwestern University School of Professional Studies will only accept official course-by-course evaluations if the evaluation explicitly indicates that the individual's course of study isthe U.S.equivalent of a bachelor's degree (or master's degree).
Specifically, if the degree requirement for admission is a conferred bachelor's degree, thecourse-by-course evaluation must read equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. lf the degreerequirement for admission is a conferred master's degree, the course-by-course evaluationmust read equivalent to a U.S. master's degree. Additionally, an applicant that has earned a U.Smaster's degree and has a bachelor's degree from outside of the U.S. must still submit anofficial course by course evaluation that indicates that the applicant has the equivalent to aU.S.bachelor's degree.
Applicants are also required to ensure that the language of instruction is included in thecourse-by-course evaluation.
NACES approved evaluation companies, ECE and Educational Perspectives, are highlyrecommended by Northwestern University School of Professional Studies.

The MALS program offers a dynamic curriculum that gives students freedom to choose from adiverse array of courses, allowing them to craft a personalized academic experience.Thecurriculum also includes applied learning opportunities that bridge the gap between academiaand the real world.
Students must complete nine courses to earn the MA in Liberal Studies degree: four corecourses, and five elective courses. Core courses include Introduction to Graduate Research andCultural Analysis, Practicum in Public Humanities, Preparing for Thesis/Capstone Project, andThesis/Capstone Project. Students may choose electives from a designated list of SPS or TGScourses from a range of humanities disciplines such as philosophy, religion, history, art history,literature, film.
Students also have an opportunity to take one independent study, which will count as electivecredit toward their graduate degree. Independent studies are customized courses of studyundertaken by a single student under the guidance of an instructor. Students often use theseopportunities to springboard into thesis work.
